Camp Brochure Redesign
The old brochure has many design
problems. First, there is way too much text on each page. The amount of text on
each page creates bad hierarchy. Hierarchy is where you look first on the page.
Because there is so much text it makes it hard to figure out where to look
first. If some of the text was taken out
if would be easier to make some things bigger than others, which would create
better hierarchy.
Another problem this brochure has
is the color scheme. It uses way to many colors that do not work with each
other. There is no theme or color scheme, which makes it hard to group things
together and figure out which words go with which. If there were less colors and
more consistent color scheme it would be easier to figure out where to look.
All of the paragraphs of text are different colors. It would be better if the
subheads were all the same and the paragraph text were all the same.
This design also lacks a consistent
grid. A grid is very important in making everything line up and make it more
visually pleasing. The lack of grid creates confusion and where to look. On the
fourth page the top has a two-column grid and the bottom has a three-column
grid. This is confusing and hurts the effectiveness of the design. The grid is
supposed to make it easier to read the information on the page. With a lack of
grid there is a loss of good communication. A grid makes it easier to figure
where everything is placed. Without the grid things do not look like they have
an order, which makes it hard to read.
On the third page the word “Meals”
should not be so big. It is not any more important than the text above so it
creates confusion because the subhead is the same as the ones above but you
cannot tell because it is so much bigger. Also by centering it, it ruins the
grid. The grid is already ruined at the top but if they kept the three-column grid
in the middle centering meals does not follow the grid. It not only does not
work with the grid it also creates white space on either side. This is confusing
and does not help the reader.
The photos also do not look like
they have a place. They do not work with the grid and do not fit with the text.
It looks like they were just thrown in where there wasn’t text. If the text
worked with the photos better it would create a better design.
There are no margins so all the
text goes right to the end of the page. The margin helps all the text be
contained and create breathing room around the page. Without it the page looks
very heavy and full of stuff.

Improving Past Work
For the first project, there were small changes I needed to
make. One of them was that the ingredients and the recipe needed to match up. They
almost did but because they did not, the grid was off a little. Another change
was the leading in the recipe making them a little farther about makes it
easier to read. I also needed to make sure that I used the soft return. This
makes it easier to make the same space between enters.
For the second project, I had a little trouble with the hierarchy
and the white space. One thing I needed to change was having not as many things
emphasized. By emphasizing all the important words it made it hard to read them
all because they all stood out. I also needed to play around more with the use
of white space. I also need to make sure that I try to limit the number of text
boxes I use.
For the third project, I just needed to make sure I remember
all the technique problems. I need to try to group wording into text boxes. I
also needed to make sure I put the Austin Museum of Art and the modern art
series on the back of the card. I also needed to make sure that I followed the
grid on the card on the back.
